Do You Like Where You Live?

Where do you live? Do you like where you live?

When it comes to picking a place to settle down, it’s always a hard choice because I have always been able to fit in. In the fifth grade I flew across the country to live in Maine for two and half months no problem. I’m sure my parents were a little shocked to see that as someone so young, I was curious about the world that homesickness was never a thing for me. The Maine wilderness was exhilarating and despite my non athletic personality, I loved waking up to no electricity and heading out to learn how to windsurf or go on a canoe trip.

Right out of high school, I moved to rural Indiana to go to college. Again, as my parents saw me off and hugged me goodbye, no sobs. I was tearful but I wasn't a wreck. And before you think I have no heart, I seriously cry at birthday cards and television shows, I am not an emotionless person. I'd like to think I'm like my mom, she's fiercely independent. I loved living in a building that was more than a hundred and sixty years old and being surrounded by a forest and learning about the Midwest way of living. Chicago was a little less than an hour away and I went every chance I got. There’s something so charming about the windy city, the people and atmosphere is so inviting and welcoming.

And then there was Manhattan. I lived on the East River and walked around the city as if it were just me and New York. I was having a love affair with my then city. The ambition was empowering and I'm lucky my dream came to light in the big apple. I spent most of time between museums, libraries, cafes and park benches just studying the history and the people. It was a very romantic way of living but the $8 box of cereal and surviving on grapes and peanut butter sandwiches was enough to teach me there is more to life than living in a closet and working fifteen hours a day.

And then there’s going abroad. I’ve never lived anywhere outside the U.S. but I wouldn’t say no to an opportunity if it presented itself to me. I’m lucky I have a job that wherever I go, it will be the same no matter what. It would even broaden my literature scope. There's for the whole language barrier, of course but that is no reason to hold you back. I'm lucky that my parents introduced the idea of traveling at a young age, instead of shell shock it was a priceless learning experiencing.

I’ve never been scared or nervous about calling a new place home because I love experiencing new cities and meeting new people. And even though making friends as adults is not as easy when you’re younger, being a librarian has its perks. It’s easy to form friendships talking about books or becoming friends with the regular patrons. I’ve always managed to find myself a little life wherever I’m situated. But as I’ve grown older and watched friends move away (for job reasons, partner and family decisions), I often fantasize about moving too. In the back of my mind I’ve always told myself, never stay somewhere because it’s the safe choice. You should be somewhere where you can be sublimely happy.

Wherever you choose to live will not only affect your day-to-day life, it can also change your personality. “Studies show that character traits, like anxiety and extroversion, vary from one state to another,” reports New York Magazine. “There’s not only a New York state of mind; there’s also a Montana mentality and an Idaho id.” And this is daunting for those who don’t get to choose where they live. Our jobs and families play a huge role in where we decide to settle down. I’m not quite there but it’s important to think about. I didn’t end up in my current city by choice and even though I’ve formed a nice little life where I’m currently living, over time associations between career advancement limitations and this place are starting to impact me in negative ways. The fear of living in comfort over happiness is starting to settle in and it makes me nervous. Am I settling?! I’m getting that feeling, the antsy feeling of needing to be somewhere else. I’m not sure if that’s city, the mountains or abroad.

All these factors are meant to contribute to our individual happiness, of course. In my research I found that the general happiness of a city is not usually something people consider. If this sounds strange to you, it should be something to consider. Each year a Well-Being Index rates U.S. cities on the residents’ feelings of purpose and community, social and financial stability and physical health. Everywhere from Salinas and Yorba Linda, California to Naples, Florida and Denmark rank as the happiest places in the world, New York doesn’t even top the 100 happiest U.S. cities to live!

Friday Morning

Happy Friday readers! Since I've been staying up past midnight trying to catch up with The Vampire Diaries, this week has seemed to drag on. With my room being finished and no other home do-it-yourself projects in the near future, I'm taking a break and enjoying relaxing with books, taking extra long walks, hitting up the park and deciding who I want Elena to be with more, Stefan or Damon Salvatore. What are your weekend plans? Can you believe it's already March? I sure can't! I'm not quite ready for spring to be here; it's one of the busiest times of the year for me since our library hosts a lot of big programs throughout the spring and getting ready for all the activities during the summer. How have you been? What have you been up too? See you next week!

Top 5

Five TV Shows I started way after the fact and loved:

The Vampire Diaries - I literally just started this series. My sister and sister-in-law seriously love this show and can talk about it at length. The other night while eating dinner and talking about new shows to start, my sister jumped for joy when I said in a whisper I was thinking about watching it. I tried to keep a straight face as my sister was trying to tell me the plot-line, she was so invested and emotionally involved with these characters, I couldn't help but want to laugh at her. But, I have to admit, it's a really good show and I'm totally Team Stefan!!!

Hart of Dixie - After watching Sweet Home Alabama on repeat for a week, I was in a 'I want to move to the South' vibe and started watching Hart of Dixie. Not exactly the greatest show ever but I really like Rachel Bilson. It totally hits the spot if you are feeling something girly, rom-comesque and cheesy.

Game of Thrones - With six seasons down and one to go, I'm just now getting into Game of Thrones. Seriously everyone around me was so excited that I finally hopped into the bandwagon of freaking out over every ninth episode. I can finally be included in Game of Thrones Season Dinner parties and I can be apart of conversations about Jon Snow and understanding what really happens north of the wall. I'm so happy I finally get what 'Winter is Coming' means! At this point, I've watched three seasons but really what is the point after 'The Red Wedding' episode? Now the question is - will I get caught before the final season airs in just a couple months!

Black Mirror - I remember reading about this show a few years ago. I'm not really a sci-fi person but in the last year, I've opened up to reading outside my chick-lit an ex-pat travelogues range and rave about the few sci-fi books I've read. The same goes for television shows. Black Mirror is one of the best shows on television, philosophically speaking. In my opinion, The BBC knows how to make excellent television. Every time I watch an episode, I have to go outside, leave my phone indoors and go swimming or frolic in the grass. Because of it's voyeuristic and realistic nature, it can be pretty warping. We're not that far away from some of the ideas the show presents. Which is kind of scary, if you stop to think about it!

Silicon Valley - I cannot get through an episode without laughing to the point of crying or my stomach hurting. TJ Miller and a bunch of nerds, there's nothing more a comedy could ask for. With a masters degree in information science I can understand some of the computer lingo on a basic level; so it's nice that I'm not completely clueless when they talk code. Erlich Bachman maybe one of the best television characters ever created.

What are you watching?

Leading Ladies

Five Things You Should Know About Eugenie Clark
a.k.a. The Shark Lady

1. Experiencing discrimination both as a woman and Japanese American, Columbia turned her down for graduate school because she was a woman. Instead she got a job in a chemistry lab and took night classes at NYU. She went on to earn both a Master of Arts in 1946 and Doctorate of Philosophy in 1950.

2. She learned to swim before the age of two and frequently visited the New York Aquarium in Battery Park, where she spent hours wondering what it would be like to swim alongside sharks.

3. During her research, she worked at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, The American Museum of Natural History, Wildlife Conservation Society and Mote Marine Laboratory in Florida to focus on ocean conservation.

4. In the Sea of Cortez, Clark rode the back of 50 foot Whale Shark.

5. Never letting discrimination bring her down, she is known as one of the worlds most important ichthyologists.

Stories for Rebel Girls

For ambitious and curious little girls, these are just a handful of excellent stories and brief bios on women that came out in last year. As we get ready to celebrate International Women's Day next month, I encourage you to take your daughters and granddaughters to the library and ask for these empowering stories and journeys. Discrimination did not get in the way of these powerhouse women.

Friday Morning

Hey guys, how is everyone doing? I don't why but I've been going to bed at like two/three in the morning almost every night this week. So I'll be winding down early over the next few days. My weekend plans include hitting the food trucks in Rancho Mirage, checking out the start of modernism week in Palm Spring and enjoying the rain storm that's suppose to hit socal this weekend. Oh, I'll always be moving my new and very white dresser into my room and finally putting clothes away in their proper place. Have an excellent weekend and I'll see you Monday morning!

Life Lately

As I'm preparing for the summer reading program at the library, I can't help but think that June really isn't that far away. Since I've been into the scallop look for a while now, I absolutely love the scalloped bathing suits at Target. A year or two ago I find the online exclusive bathing suits through a blogger so I immediately bought the bikini, now I'm filling this one piece! Make sure to check out their online collection!

These lip plumping masks are all the rage at the moment. My mom surprised me with a few for Valentine's Day (thank you, thank you, thank you) and I'm kind of excited to see if they actually work. While I definitely want to try it out the last experience I had with a lip plumping lipstick made my lips not only swell and sting but it took a nearly three weeks for the reaction to subside. It was painful and horrific to say the least.

Growing up, I have always strayed away from oils but now I can't get enough. I rub some on my face in the evening, spray a little on my pillow to help me sleep and put a few drops in my diffuser when I'm getting ready to hit the sheets. Nuxe Oil is my absolute favorite, you can use it on hair, face and body and it smells absolutely delicious. If you want glowing healthy skin, this is seriously it!

I cannot remember how I came across Healthnut Nutrition but I watch Nikole's channel every Wednesday when she posts. Seriously her recipes are delicious, I can't stop eating this particular recipe.

There's this quaint health food grocery mart and deli that's been in Palm Desert for years and it's one of my favorite places to shop for healthy groceries and I usually grab their hummus wrap at Luscious Lorraine's which is located inside the grocery store. If you're a health-nut then you must stop by and have lunch!

Lately, my snacks consist of pita chips, hummus and snap peas. If your catching up on your favorite show and you need something to munch on, it's a refreshing and light snack for the afternoon.

Now that I have a bath again I've been looking everywhere for bubble bath. Seriously Dr. Teals is the best!!! Before I got hooked on Dr. Teals, I was buying expensive and luxurious bath soap, which is nice but the Eucalyptus and Peppermint, Lavender and Pink Himalayan Salt Foaming Bath by this brand are so calming and relaxing!

Last week Stila came out with metallic glitter and glow eye-shadows. They are gorgeous! I've been wearing Stila since high school and they are still one of my all time favorite brands. It seems to be such an underrated beauty company, but I continue to support and promote their products!

At our first Silent Book Club meeting, there wasn't a lot of reading. I apologize, I promise I'll shut up and read at the next meeting. But since I knew everyone and those people didn't know each other I felt like the best introduction was talking about the books everyone brought and I ended up buying some later that night. I've already started The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend and it is lovely. If you're a book lover and you love stories about bookshops and books about books, then this is for you!

Everyday Arm Workouts

I'm not usually one who has a list of exercises (at five reps a move) that equate to filling an hour's worth of time. If I go to the gym, I typically hit the stair-master and cool down on the treadmill but like I've said a thousand times, give me a lap pool and I'm good. In an effort to do more strength training (since that was my intention at the beginning of the year) I recently started following Cassey over on at Blogilates. Her positive attitude and less than twenty minute videos are apart of my daily routine. I always look forward to new content and I have to say my favorite workouts are the night time stretchers and her arm workout regime that requires no equipment! Here's the workout, I roughly do four reps of each every evening. I seriously feel the burn but a week into them I feel a little bit stronger and looking forward to having toned arms. And if you want to follow her, here's the direct link to the arm workout.

The moves are:
1. Pull Backs
2. Shoulder Presses
3. Kneeling Triceps
4. Walnut Crushers
5. Prayer Pulses

Thoughts on Exercising

I've been following Gemma Correll for a few years now. I pretty much love everything, if you couldn't tell I post her illustrations on social media all the time. I find her humorous thoughts on exercising to be the best and generally I feel the same as her.

this week's favorites...

Culture Fact of the Day: The Bajau people of Malaysia spend most of their lives at sea. Their homes are wooden huts and they live off seafood, fishing from their handmade boats. Some Bajau people experience "ground sickness" like we experience seasickness. What are you loving this week?

Friday Morning

Good morning & Happy Friday readers! How have you been - busy, tired, in good spirits? It's been a usual busy week for me between planning the summer reading program activities, ideas for starting new programs each month, getting excited for silent book club starting this Monday and preparing myself for up coming trips by reading a lot of books. There's so much on my mind between work, blog related endeavors, vacations and other projects, I'm in this place where I'm not sure where to start. This weekend is about being less distracted and getting outside - hiking, swimming, going for walks and just relaxing. What are your plans?

Read, Drink, Repeat

Welcome to Introvert Happy Hour.

Silent Book Club started in 2012 with a couple of friends reading in companionable silence at our neighborhood bar. We loved books, and reading with friends, but most of our previous attempts at book clubs had fizzled out.Often with traditional book clubs there's the scramble to finish the assigned book, and the pressure to have something smart to say. Wouldn't it be great to have a book club where you could just enjoy books, friends, and wine—without any homework?

-Guinevere de la Mare, Laura Gluhanich, and Kristin Appenbrink

So that side project I've been working on for the last couple months is finally ready to happen. I'm more than excited to be the administrator for the Palm Springs location of Silent Book Club, our first event is next Monday, we're meeting at the cutest of all restaurants/bar in downtown Palm Desert and I'm hoping to see lots of new and old faces. If there is not one in your hometown, cozy up and check out their website and start one on your own, the founder is pretty cool! With local chapters scattered in every major city throughout the U.S. from New York to Seattle, welcome to the newest member of the family, we invite you to join us all over the Coachella Valley.

And if you don't have the time to find and/or read a book. We have a few great suggestions for starting an article club. Those Aren't Fighting Words, Dear, Why is it Hard to Make Friends Over 30, The Busy Trap, Surprised to See Me?, Why We Cheat, Courting Your Friends, Is There Life After Work Masters of Love, How to Be Polite!

Five Things You Probably Didn't Know

Five Things You Probably Didn't Know: Barcelona

1. There are two stories about the founding of Barcelona. One version claims the city was founded by Hercules, 400 years before the building of Rome.

2. Barcelona is to thank for World Book Day.

3. The Sagrada Familia has taken longer to build the Great Pyramids. It is still incomplete!

4. Barceloneta beaches are artificial. They were built for the Summer Olympics in 1992.

5. Barcelona has 12 abandoned metro stations and they are haunted.

Bonus: Flamenco is a very popular dance form in Spain. But, in Barcelona it is not so popular and people don’t appreciate it as much as in the rest of the Spain. They prefer contemporary rock-n-roll.
