Hawaii

The first time I went to Hawaii, I was two years old. I haven't been back since. So the next big vacation I'm planning for is to the islands. Since I haven't been in over twenty years, I am all ears. What's the best island to visit? Things to do? Sights to see? Please flood my inbox :)

The Librarian Suggests

What I'm Reading: Since I'm currently weeding the children's fiction section and I came across a blogger reading this to her daughter, I am completely in love with The Family Under the Bridge. A lovely short story about an old Parisan man name Armand and an unlikely relationship with the family under the bridge, it's quick to warm your heart.. I'm also reading SuperMutant Magic Academy and it's pretty awesome. I have been on a graphic novel kick for a few months and since I can read through them in twenty minutes, I've been reading a ton lately. I'm about to start The Paris Architect, so if you want to get started we can chat about it on Twitter :) What I'm listening too and watching: Two words: Trey Songz!!! He has the most beautiful voice! Have you listened to his latest album? And lately I've been watching a lot of 90's teen rom-coms like 10 Things I Hate About You, She's All That, Clueless, Can't Hardly Wait, Cruel Intentions, Bring it On and Never Been Kissed. What are you reading, watching and listening too?

Blueberry and Lemon Balm Ice Cream

When it comes to eating or drinking anything sweet, my go to flavor is pomegranate blueberry. It's just so delicious and refreshing and perfect for a summery treat. Although there's no pomegranate in this recipe, it sounds delicious and an ice cream I definitely want to try making.  What's your favorite ice cream flavor?

Ingredients:

For the roasted blueberries:
1 lb. blueberries, fresh or frozen
2 tablespoons Lyle's Golden Syrup (or substitute honey)

For the ice cream custard:
1 3/4 cup whole milk
1/2 cup (100 g) sugar
2 teaspoons finely chopped lemon balm
3 strips of lemon zest
1 cup heavy whipping cream
5 egg yolks

Instructions:

For the blueberries:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Place blueberries in one roasting pan (use two if needed) large enough so that the berries remain in a single layer. Drizzle the Golden Syrup over the berries. Place in the preheated oven and roast for 30-35 minutes, stirring at least once. Roast until the berries have given up some of their liquid and a thick, purple syrup has formed. Place berries in a container and set aside to cool.
Blueberries may be prepared up to three days ahead.

For the ice cream custard:
In a large bowl, prepare an ice bath. Place a smaller bowl in the ice bath and set a fine-meshed strainer n top. Pour heavy cream through the sieve into the bowl.
In a small saucepan, combine sugar and milk. On medium-low heat, warm the mixture. When warm, add the lemon balm and lemon zest. Turn off heat, cover with lid, and allow flavors to infuse for 30 minutes.
After the 30 minutes, reheat the milk over medium-low heat until it is hot, Stir together egg yolks. Add a few tablespoons of milk to the yolks and stir quickly. Add a bit more milk and stir again. This warms up the egg yolks and prevents them from curdling.
Pour the yolk mixture into the heated milk-sugar mixture and stir quickly using a heat-proof spatula. Continue stirring and scraping the bottom. This will prevent lumps and clumps from forming. As you stir and scrape, you will eventually notice that the bottom is becoming easier to scrape. It almost feels silky, as if the spatula is gliding across the bottom of the saucepan. This is a sign that your custard is nearly done. It is fully done when the mixture coats the spatula.
Pour the custard through the sieve and into the bowl of cream. Mix quickly and vigorously so that everything is combined and cools slightly. Cover the bowl and place in the refrigerator to cool completely. Overnight is best.
When the mixture has thoroughly cooled, place it in your ice cream maker and churn according to manufacturer's instructions. Once churned, place the finished ice cream in a freezer-proof container and put in the freezer for a few hours to harden a bit more.
Serve plain or with some fresh berries, and garnish with lemon balm leaves.

Alex and Ani

Apparently I am out of the loop with the latest jewelry trend, Alex and Ani  bracelets. When I started writing this blog a few years ago, I introduced my mom to bloggers and brands I thought she would like and now she is way ahead of me when it comes to all the trendy items. Some of my favorite things she's gotten me hooked to include le labo candles, the feed organization, this nail polish, Thayers Tonerthe original matchstick bottle and now these bracelets. Have you gotten yourself one, if its been awhile go ahead and treat yourself :)

Friday Morning

What are you up too this weekend? Since I've been staying up all hours of the night (and not by choice) and getting up early, I'm slightly crabby and a little agitated. All I need is five minutes peace, actually make that a few hours of uninterrupted quiet time. The littlest things have been setting me off and everyone is probably thinking what the heck is up with her.  I'm heading out to the coast for the weekend celebrating with my family and wishing my cousin a perfect wedding day. Since she lives in Sweden with her picture perfect little family, (no joke her baby is the cutest little girl I've ever seen. In fact I'm pretty sure she's modeled for the H&M Baby Line) I'm ecstatic to be visiting with family.  Have a cozy and not so hot weekend!!

The Daily Escape

"I need to get out of town. You know, I think I need some peace and quiet... or whatever it is people go away for. You know what I really want to do? I want to eat carbs without wanting to kill myself. You know, I want to read a book! Not just a magazine, an actual book. For years I read this reviews, I buy the books but I never read them," (quoted from my favorite Nancy Meyer film, The Holiday) These are my feelings almost exactly at the moment, in almost a year of working I have requested for one vacation and that is all. I love my job a little too much and when I'm not working the 9-6 job, I'm working on at least one or two work/blog related projects. I have some workaholic tendencies but I'm trying to work on it! So what I really want (and need) is to take an extended vacation overseas, enjoy foreign territory, get lost and explore, wander through museums and stroll through the streets with baguettes and chocolatey treats in hand. I've never been to Austria but I've been watching Sam Brown traipse through Salzberg and Innsburk the past few nights, so I'm in state of complete wanderlust. Taking vacations anytime soon? Where are you heading?

My Top Five

Without a doubt my absolute favorite podcast to follow regarding all things books, television + film and music is NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour.

If you ask any of my family or friends, they will surely tell you that I know everything there is to know about Gilmore Girls because I've seen every episode several times. I have an annual showing every fall, so it's no surprise that Gilmore Guys is one of my latest addictions.

Have you listened to Mortified yet? Listen to Saving Katherine Hepburn and you'll get hooked.

For games, puzzles and an hour of laughing out loud, I cannot wait for the newest episode of Ask Me Another.

And lastly, if you're a book lover like me then surely you are listening to the Book Riot podcast. Isn't it fantastic?!
(A friend recently suggested mystery to me, have you heard of it?)

this week's favorites...

I woke up on the fourth wishing I were in the Hamptons surrounded by bright pink flowers, picket fences and white beaches. Even though I only spent a weekend in East Hampton with my mom and sister,  that weekend is still fresh in my mind and I'm dying to go back. Happy Friday, have an excellent weekend :)

Things to do in Summer

One of the best (indoor) tents I ever built (when I was little) took over half of my parent's living room. My sister and I built it out of sheets and old blankets, we wedged them between the couch and the fire place and wrapped them around the edges of other furniture right in front of the television and spent the night in the living room. We filled it with our dolls and other toys, a flashlight for reading and telling scary stories (and to hit anybody just in case someone decided to scare us), candy and soda galore and staying up way too late watching movies we probably were not allowed to be watching. How are you (and your family) trying to avoid boredom this summer?

DIY Mason Jar Projects

Since I grew up in a small town that literally sat in the middle of nowhere in the desert of California, I remember summers being long and grueling. Movie theaters never kept a float and the next big town was nearly two hours away. Boredom was around every corner and avoiding it was the biggest mission during our triple digit summers. My sister and I were always up for playing dress up, coloring in our jumbo coloring books, learning how to play jacks with my mom and getting creative. I especially love this great mason jar project for a quiet summer evening.

Direction:
1. Cut open a glow stick and shake the contents into a mason jar.

2. Add diamond glitter.

3. Seal the top with a lid.

4. And Shake.
